Journey to the Cloud, Part I

This is the first in a series of blogs that will look at a real world example of a small business’ journey to Cloud Computing.

Hi all. With the buzz the past couple of years surrounding Cloud Computing, I thought I’d take some time to present a real world case study on how Compuquip is helping its smaller customers take advantage of Cloud Computing. This series of blogs will focus on a small private bank with one location and about 35 employees.

Before we get into the details, let’s lay out some definitions as to what Cloud Computing is and what it isn’t.

Cloud Computing IS a means of consuming and distributing computing resources. It is an approach to computing. This approach strives to provide companies with flexible and scalable infrastructures that in turn result in more or less computing resources as needed by the business.

Cloud Computing is NOT a destination. Using Software-as-a-Service offerings like Google Mail does not in and of itself mean that you are embracing Cloud Computing as an IT strategy (although SaaS offerings CAN be part of a larger overall Cloud Strategy).

In short, a true Cloud strategy looks at all resources of your IT environment (hardware, software, people, licenses, functions) and attempts to allow companies to consume these resources efficiently, on-demand, and with a low-level of overhead and a high-level of control.

With that out of the way, the next blog in this series will start putting the puzzle pieces together. See you next time…
