When you want to find out how to get somewhere, one typically pulls out a road map from the glove compartment – or nowadays the iPhone Map app. Regardless of the means, the objective is getting to your destination as efficiently and inexpensively as possible. You wouldn’t embark on a long journey without a map and you certainly wouldn’t jump into a business-changing technology decision without one either. In the IT services industry, this is referred to as a Technology Roadmap. It plots the state of your technology infrastructure as of today and where you would like it to be 2-3 years down the road. Before we go further down the roadmap, you need to first perform a network assessment. This evaluation of your systems determines what items need to be addressed today and which should be addressed tomorrow. Based on this information, you can integrate priority and timing into your Technology Roadmap – which together leads to phased IT projects.

If you work for one of the many companies currently utilizing Tapes as your primary method of Backing Up and Restoring your data, I want you to stop reading this blog, go get your box of Tapes, and throw them out the window. Ready? GO!

Are you back yet? If you truly followed my instructions, please retrieve the Tapes as I wouldn’t want to cost anyone their job. That being said, I was hoping to use some dramatic effect to set the tone for the rest of this article. I truly believe the time has come for Disk-to-Disk-to-Disk backups to replace Disk-to-Tape or even Disk-to-Disk-to-Tape as the preferred method of architecting your Backup and Restore infrastructure. Hello again. In the third installment of this Journey to the Cloud series, we will continue to examine the tactics, or components, which our banking client used to drive their Cloud Strategy. More specifically, this entry will focus on Virtualization.

Component #2: Virtualization

Virtualization refers to any technology that enables the abstraction of software (Operating System, Application, or Data) from its underlying hardware. While this concept has been around since the IBM Mainframe days, VMware has been the pioneer and market leader, by a wide margin, in Virtualization technologies for x86 systems (basically what you think of as a standard Dell, HP, or IBM Server). Likewise, there are several Storage Virtualization vendors who allow you to create Windows or VMware Volumes independent of the tradition fixed-RAID technology. Dell EqualLogic has been a key partner for Compuquip as we’ve helped our client’s journey to the cloud.
