My Mom Told Me to “Google It”

This weekend I asked my mom for help with a recipe because we were grilling some lobster at the house. Her response to me was “Google It”

Remember when we were kids and our parents were the “all-knowing people” in our lives that immediately knew the answer to any question we had?  How times have changed that now when I ask for a recipe I’m pointed in the direction of Google.

I recently got the iPhone 4S with the Siri feature and just like many others I have been testing it out asking the most random things.  Siri understands me perfectly and either gets me the answer right away or if not says “would you like me to search the web for it”.   Similar to the experience with my mom, if Siri doesn’t know the answer she “Google’s it” too.

As a soon to be father, it got me thinking about when my daughter starts to ask me questions or help with homework.  What if I don’t know the answer, then I thought to myself I better keep a smartphone near by as a reference.  It reminded me of a recent comment Bill Gates said in an interview where he uses Khan Academy to get a “refresher” on topics before his kids come to him to ask for help on their homework.  He watches a quick video, learns the topic, and is then ready to help with homework.

Amazing that kids born today will not know a world where there isn’t Google to search for any questions you have, Facebook to keep in touch with your friends, Skype to have video calls on your smartphone, and Siri to help with anything you may not be able to find.

Technology is changing our every day lives and it excites me that we are in the technology business because what we do will only become more and more important in our clients and partners lives.

And for those interested, we decided to simply cut the lobster tails in half and marinate them with salt & pepper and a little butter while we grilled them.  We grilled them for about 5 to 8 minutes to make sure they didn’t over cook and they came our delicious.  See the tasty picture:
