Outrageous Headlines – Really?

Recently I’ve come across a few articles from reputable sources that have unbelievable headlines. Here are my favorites:

Google: The Search Party is Over – Fortune Cover Story

Is the PC Era Coming to an End? – Inc Magazine

And the one that drove the idea for this post…

The End of Outsourcing (As We Know It) – Business Week

Reading these three headlines within two weeks of each other is mind blowing to me. Google still makes $6 billion a year, IN PROFIT, and is absolutely dominant in the technology industry. This article discusses Facebook as a threat…really? $6 billion in profit vs. reportedly none? Really?

The PC headline is also a bit crazy. Tablets have been around for quite some time and still have not replaced the real need for PCs. I can see where they are going with the topic but that’s a bit of a stretch of a title.

And lastly, there is no end to Outsourcing. Compuquip’s business is growing quite a bit and that growth is mostly being fueled by our Managed IT Services offering (AKA – outsourcing). This type of a headline, which has been quoted by other periodicals like CIO.com and Inc.com is misleading and unfortunate. Why not just explain the situations as they are. If someone reads the headline and that’s it (which happens often), then they are left with the totally wrong idea.

So my question is, do we really need the drama? I can understand that periodicals need to compete with all the noise of the Internet (Compuquip not included of course), but these are three very reputable magazines. These headlines remind me of a recent, great SNL skit: “Really with Seth & Amy”. Really Business Week? Really Fortune? Really Inc.?
