Hundreds of business leaders gathered in Miami to discuss how to nurture the emerging biotech sector of Florida’s economy.

Biotechnolgy research is on the rise in Florida, but the state needs to lure venture capital away from other well-known tech corridors, like Boston, Austin, Texas and the Silicon Valley in order to become an industry powerhouse.

The Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce and Gunster Attorneys at Law hosted a luncheon at Jungle Island in Miami Wednesday to spread that idea to more than 500 business leaders from around the state. Groups like the Burnham Institute for Medical Research in Orlando, Max Planck Florida Institute and Scripps Florida in Jupiter, and the University of Miami’s Miller School of Medicine boasted about their accomplishments and growth forecasts and rallied the audience to collaborate to grow the sector.

Compuquip congratulates security partner Check Point Software Technologies for their recent recognition by research company Gartner, Inc. as an Internet security leader.  Check Point was positioned in the Leaders Quadrant of the Mobile Data Protection Magic Quadrant, reflecting their completeness of vision and ability to execute.

Compuquip President and CEO Alberto Dosal was asked to comment on the honor.  He remarked, “Check Point data security products assure businesses that their information is secure. In addition to industry-leading encryption capabilities, Check Point’s solutions require minimal administration and end-user involvement, thereby reducing operational costs for customers.”

Five to six years ago “IT outsourcing” was a phrase that carried a very negative connotation, linking outsourcing to shipping jobs overseas and taking jobs away from the American people.  I can remember watching Lou Dobbs’ segment “Exporting America” where he listed off the companies who were outsourcing all types of work overseas (and basically saying “shame on them”).

IT Outsourcing was the most visible type of outsourcing since every time you would call for IT support on any home electronics you would almost certainly get someone on the phone from the other side of the world.  Combine that with the negative stereotype of losing American jobs to foreign countries and the IT industry had created (accidentally) a country where “outsourcing”, and specifically for IT, became a taboo concept to discuss.

Finally, major publications and IT industry experts are now recognizing a viable trend in the outsourcing world, “speed sourcing”.   Compuquip’s growing Managed IT Services practice has been a staple in this new trend. (Refer to CIO Magazine’s description of Speed Sourcing)

During the boom years of the economy and IT outsourcing, both the perspective organizations and IT Service providers had the time and resources available to dedicate (up front) to create contractual agreements which led to overly complex long term agreements.   The rigidity and complexity of these contracts often times contributed to unsatisfactory results and (along with offshore sourcing) led to the negative connotation of IT outsourcing today.

Now during difficult times we are all looking to reduce expenses to focus on what we do best. Read more »
